Why Traditional Testing Falls Short
Flaws of Air Samples
Ambient air samples, often referred to as spore traps, are a snapshot in time and should not be solely relied on during a mold assessment. Air samples are also not capable of capturing mold spore fragments, which can outnumber spore counts as much as 200-500x and are also a health hazard. Additionally, spore traps do not capture mycotoxins which is often times what makes occupants sick.
Moisture Analysis
Moisture meters or thermal imaging can be great tools but only when there is an active moisture source. Many times visible signs of water damage will be seen after a water leak. However, if there is no longer an active moisture source, which is commonly the case, the fungal colony will go dormant (which can still be a health hazard!) and these tools will be unable to detect the colony.
There is No Perfect Test
Each test is designed for a specific purpose and each has their own limitations. Regardless if a test is accurate or not, there is no test able to accurately pinpoint fungal colonies, which is why a multipronged mold assessment should be performed for a complete analysis of the home.
